Here is a project we completed a few years ago before we bought the current Alameda cottage. Our previous house was brand new so there were not any remodeling projects. Instead, we turned to building furniture, organizers, and landscaping projects. I was not blogging much at the time so unfortunately I don’t have any progress photos of many of these projects. I can however describe how the project was completed.
The bed was inspired by the hanging beds in palapas on the beaches in Mexico. Instead of hanging the bed with heavy rope, I took a modern approach and used vinyl covered steel cable 3/16″ thick. With a load strength of 1050 lbs it was the perfect balance of strong yet low profile.
The bed was built using a frame of 2×4’s and 2×6’s held together with a series of metal Simpson Strong Tie brackets and screws. The exterior wood we found at a Pier One Imports outlet store. There was a closeout of a bunch of surplus bed rails. The wood was beautiful and cheap so we bought up everything in the store. I guess a lot of people bought the head and foot boards but didn’t buy bed rails. We carefully cut and attached the wood to the frame using liquid nails and screws from the inside so there were no holes to fill or any marring to the finish. We covered the inside of the frame with a hardwood veneered plywood to give additional strength and make for a nice smooth interior. Once the bed was complete it weighed around 300 lbs.
All the weight as well as movement of the bed needed special support to hang from the ceiling. in order to spread out the load, in the attic, I placed two 8ft 4×4’s perpendicular to the ceiling joists. The 4×4’s were attached to each joist with joist hangers. Each cable was fed though the ceiling, through the center of the 4×4 and then wrapped around the 4×4 and secured. Where the cable passed through the Sheetrock we added a chrome grommet we picked up at West Marine.
We built this entire bed in-place and when we moved we had to leave it behind since it would need to be cut in half to remove it from the room. Although it would not fit in our current house, we learned a lesson to plan better if we wish to take something with us in the future.
Here are a few photos of the final product as well as a grainy video.
